Mekong Delta

Every time I'm leading this trip, and we get to the Mekong Delta, we take a small boat down the narrow canals near the floating market in Can Tho..and as we are cruising the canals, with the motor chugging along, I get these visions of Francis Ford Coppola's epic film, Apocalypse Now. You know, it's the scene where they are on the patrol boat heading down the river.....

While the crew is busy reading mail, Lance pops open a purple smoke grenade, catching the attention of an unseen enemy hiding in the trees by the river, and prompting an attack on the boat. Clean is killed as he listens to an audio tape from his mother. Chief, who had a close relationship with Clean, becomes increasingly hostile to Willard. As the boat continues up the river it passes under the tail of a crashed B52.  Later, villagers begin shooting arrows at the boat as it approaches the camp. The crew opens fire until Chief is hit by a spear. Willard attempts to assist the mortally wounded Chief, who tries to kill Willard by pulling him onto the spear tip protruding from his chest….crazy stuff….great movie…always makes me want to watch it again.

Anyway, enough about Apocalypse Now…here are some pictures taken over the last 24 hours,  from the Mekong Delta portion of our trip.

Wow–so cool to see this! It brings back so many great memories. Grab a cup of that fantastic iced coffee at the little outdoor restaurant for me! I hope everyone is enjoying those constant discoveries in Vietnam. I sure hope you kept your Apocalypse story for AFTER the boat trip! Bon Voyage mon ami!

    Hi Anietra,
Thanks for the comment…yes, I was thinking about your interaction with the locals at the Cholon market the other day…you were having such a great time. I’ve already had a few iced coffees, but I will have another in your honor tomorrow. Cheers, Karl

    Karl,
Anietra is right. What a fantastice trip with so many “memorable moments” for us to share, bond with, and, laugh about. Besides the iced coffe, they had the BEST Spring Rolls I have ever eaten. I think Anietra and I
went back 3 time for the coffee and Spring Rolls. We have been trying to be ambassadors for Vietnam to inform
everyone about the beautiful people, places, and things. Many people have the wrong impression and must be
educated that things have changed. One dear, sweet old man, in the Hanoi market, came up to me and said,”We were once enemies, but we are now friends!” How beautiful and I said that I agreed and thanked him.
I know everyone on this trip is now experiencing a new meaning for Vietnam and the people. Sure wish Anietra on the trip again.
    Robbie
