A fter a morning shoot at the floating market, we spent the rest of the day shooting in Can Tho town. The following day we traveled north to Danang and made a quick stop at China beach before checking into our hotel in Hoi An. Hoi An, was an important Vietnamese trading center in the 16th and 17th centuries. In 1999, Hoi An’s old town was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site as a well-preserved example of a Southeast Asian trading port with buildings that display a unique blend of local and foreign influences.
The following is a collection of only those photographs which I made with my wide angle lens.
I’ll follow up this post with a series from my long lens as soon as I can, perhaps in a few days time when we’re back in Hanoi.
The following 45 images were all made with my 16-35mm f2.8 lens. You may notice that I often shoot a series of the same subject or the same scene, in an attempt to get a good shot. I also vary shooting angles, selecting both low and high vantage points, hoping to create different, interesting and/or compelling compositions.
A technical note: the “starburst” photos near the end of this post, were made by “stopping down” the lens to f11 or more (the smaller the aperture opening the more pronounced the effect will be) and pointing your camera at the sun, while letting the sun “just peek above something in your composition (like the overhang of a building, a motorbike or woman’s shoulder as in my photos). Depending on how many aperture blades your particular lens has, you will see a corresponding number of points on your “starburst”.
Enjoy.
