The Rann of Kutch is a seasonal salt marsh located in the Thar Desert in the Kutch District of Gujarat, India and the Sindh province of Pakistan. It is almost 3 thousand square miles in size and is reputed to be one of the largest salt desert in the world.
The name “Rann” comes from the Hindi word ran (रण) meaning “desert”. For centuries, this area is been inhabited by the friendly Kutchi people who live in towns, village and small cities in and around the desert. Some are salt workers, others livestock herders and still others are nomadic people live out on the salt flats and in the dry desolate areas, moving continuously with the seasons.
We spent 2 days in this fascinating area, photographing village life, observing wildlife, livestock herders, salt workers and visiting lakes within the Rann which are host to migratory birds including large numbers of flamingos.
