We spent our first day, cameras in hand, wandering around Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City as it&#8217;s now called). We visited many of Saigon\u2019s icons including the spectacular turn-of-the-century Colonial French Post Office, the War Remnants Museum, the turn of the century Opera House and the Catholic Cathedral in the Dong Khoi Street area. We also explored Binh Tay Market and Thien Hau Pagoda (Cantonese pagoda) in Cho Lon district.<\/p>\n<p><a powerful collection of photographs taken by 134 international journalists who were killed during the Vietnam war, including\u00a0Henri Huet, Dickey Chapelle,\u00a0<strong><\/strong>and Larry Burrows. The exhibit is called &#8220;Requiem&#8221; and was donated by the state of Kentucky.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/karlgrobl.com\/blog\/2013\/03\/vietnam-photo-tour-day-onesaigon\/btm102vietnam-helicopter-on-roof\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14666\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14666\" title=\"BTM102:VIETNAM HELICOPTER ON ROOF\" src=\"http:\/\/karlgrobl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/saigon_helicopter.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/karlgrobl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/saigon_helicopter.jpg 400w, https:\/\/karlgrobl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/saigon_helicopter-290x196.jpg 290w, https:\/\/karlgrobl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/saigon_helicopter-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/karlgrobl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/saigon_helicopter-277x187.jpg 277w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Above is a photograph that became one of the most remembered images of the fall of Saigon, capturing the last chaotic days of the Vietnam war. Most people believed that it showed desperate Americans crowding on to the roof of the United States Embassy to board a helicopter because that&#8217;s what the picture caption usually says, but in fact, that &#8220;usual caption&#8221; is wrong and it was not the caption originally written by Hubert Van Es, the United Press International photographer who shot it on April 29<sup>th<\/sup> 1975. The photograph if of an apartment building at 22 Gia Long Street. Below, you can see what the building (which is still standing), looks like today (my photo taken from the opposite side of the building). Van Ngo spends his days translating and writing letters for folks who are unable to do so. He\u2019s famous here at the post office and known lovingly as \u201cthe little corporal\u201d.\u00a0 Van Ngo has been performing this service for over 20 years.
