Back in 2001 I shot a job for <a href=\"http:\/\/hvousa.org\/\">Health Volunteers Overseas<\/a>. One of the locations that I photographed was HAS or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hashaiti.org\/A1a.html\">Hopital Albert Schweitzer<\/a>(yes, it\u2019s Hopital not Hospital). HAS was started 50 years ago and the story behind it is one, that I think, you might be interested in.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/karlgrobl.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/12\/entrance.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border-width: 0px;\" src=\"http:\/\/karlgrobl.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/12\/entrance.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">HAS was started by William Larry (Larimer) Mellon, a member of the wealthy Carnegie Mellon family of Pittsburgh. Larry fell under the spell of Albert Schweitzer, the Nobel laureate, physician and humanitarian who started a hospital in the African country of Gabon. Following in Schweitzer\u2019s footsteps, Larry Mellon, well into his 30\u2019s, <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.tulane.edu\/feature_haiti_1.cfm\">enrolled in medical school<\/a>, became a physician and built a hospital in Haiti, the <a href=\"http:\/\/web.worldbank.org\/WBSITE\/EXTERNAL\/COUNTRIES\/LACEXT\/HAITIEXTN\/0,,contentMDK:21040686~pagePK:141137~piPK:141127~theSitePK:338165,00.html\">poorest country<\/a> in the western hemisphere.<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mellon\u2019s story and the story of HAS is told in the book \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Song-Haiti-Barry-Paris\/dp\/1891620134\">Song of Haiti<\/a>\u201d, which should be on Oprah\u2019s must read list.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/karlgrobl.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/12\/book.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border-width: 0px;\" src=\"http:\/\/karlgrobl.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/12\/book.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I\u2019ve had the opportunity to shoot for HAS many times and my visits there are always eye-opening and inspiring. The work being done there by HAS\u2019s crew of dedicated humanitarians is astonishing. Have a look at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hashaiti.org\/A1a.html\">HAS website<\/a> to learn more about this amazing institution. I produced a rudimentary <a href=\"http:\/\/karlgrobl.com\/videos\/HASvideo.htm\">video for HAS<\/a>, but since I made it quite a while ago, a plug-in required. Sorry<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While in Haiti, I usually make it a point to spend at least one night at the Oloffson hotel in Port au Prince. It\u2019s one of those places where journalists hang out, and\u00a0 one always meets interesting people there.
