Leaving Mumbai in the morning, we flew south to Cochin and on arrival, immediately drove straight to Thissur and quickly checked into our hotel. Our goal was to reach a local elephant festival where we had the chance to photograph 30 extravagantly decorated elephants carrying deities from neighboring temples as they arrived at the local temple accompanied by drummers and dancers. The festival was a chaotic, visual, auditory and olfactory extravaganza of epic proportions.<\/p>\n

The following day we boarded our private houseboats on the backwaters of Kerala complete with our own captain, cook and hospitality staff.\u00a0 The backwaters form the arteries through which rural daily life calmly flows – children splashing in the water, women washing clothes at the water’s edge, fishermen up to their necks in water digging out fish with their feet, rice barges transporting coconuts and rice. An overriding sense of peace and tranquility permeates every aspect of this stunning region and we took the ample opportunity to relax, photograph and enjoy this little bit of Indian “heaven”.<\/p>\n
