East India is the poorest region in this large and populous country. Freedom from Hunger’s work is focused in east India, where they bring self-help services to the poorest communities in the poorest states. Freedom From Hunger is one of my oldest clients; my first assignment with them was in Haiti in 2001. This week, I’ll be photographing their programs here in West Bengal and Orissa, so please stay tuned to the blog, as I will be updating whenever my 3g modem is working, and I have enough time.
Freedom From Hunger works in the states of Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Jharkhand, Bihar and West Bengal. As in other countries that they work in, they develop programs that meet the special needs of the rural poor. While most people think of urban poverty when they think of poverty in India, rural areas are home to the majority of poor people and their plight is considerably more desperate than that of the urban poor.

Karl, I love seeing your NGO work almost more than that from the photo tours.. I can’t actually believe I said that seeing that I am an avid follower of your photo tours.. but the question I have is why am I not previously aware of these incredible NGO’s that you do work for? Where am I missing the feed of information that would make me aware of who is doing what out there? Your blog does more to publicize what people are doing in some of these countries than anything else I have found.. If you have any suggestions of where I should look to be \plugged in\ to these good works, please share.. In the meantime..keep shooting and sharing. Catherine
