I have looked long and hard for the perfect cool/cold/rain jacket. Since I only carry one jacket (and a fleece liner), I wanted one with a lot of features that end up making a a big difference. Having used Marmot in the past and having been very satisfied with their quality and attention to detail, I was looking for theirs and I found it on the sale rack at REI. It was the Marmot Tamarack Jacket….regular price is around $200, I picked it up for just $90. This model is still available so, get one now if you can, because it has been “updated” and replaced by jackets that in my judgment, just don’t compare !

The Marmot Tamarack or is it (Tamarak) acket is a no nonsense, top-value, all-around waterproof jacket thanks to Marmot MemBrain, a waterproof/breathable fabric, as well as an Enduro DWR finish.

Underarm PitZips extend into the body for aggressive venting, articulated (angel wing) allow freedom of movement, necessary to comfortably hold your cameras. The shoulders and elbows are reinforced with heavier fabric for protection in high abrasion areas.

There is an inside water bottle cargo pocket and zip stash pocket, a sleeve stash pocket with fit a set of keys or small items. The gripper elastic powder skirt keeps out the breeze, while an elastic draw cord waist and hem allows for adjustability in serious weather. If the temperature ever drops from mild to downright chilly, the Tamarack Jacket is Zip in compatible, so you can zip in a fleece jacket for extra warmth.

The Mamrot Tamarack Jacket is a fundamental piece for any photojournalist’s cool to cold weather travel gear. Here are all the specs…

waterproof/breathable MemBrain® construction.
100% Mini-diamond ripstop nylon with 2-layer MemBrain® laminate waterproof/breathable shell fabric.
MemBrain® is treated with Enduro DWR (durable water repellent) finish for added weather protection.
Micro-stitched and seam-taping assure further that the jacket is weatherproof, Heavier fabric. on the shoulders and elbows. protects these high abrasion areas.
A zip-off ERG hood can be stashed away on sunny play days.
PitZips™ allow you to vent. Angel-Wing Movement™ design prevents your sleeves from riding up when you lift your arms.
Gripper elastic powder skirt seals out snow and cold drafts.
Scepter™ laser drilled, water-resistant chest and hand pockets. Inside water bottle cargo pocket. Zip stash pocket. Avg. wt. 2lbs. 2oz.

For situations where I need more warmth, my friend, writer, and fellow photographer Theresa Vernetti bought me this Reactor Full Zip Jacket for my birthday, so now I take it along on trips for use on really cold days…(together these two pieces take up no more than a single 200 wt fleece jacket but are infinitely more versatile) The Marmot Reactor Full Zip Jacket is a simple, super soft, lightweight pile jacket that’s an exceptional zip-in layer for extra warmth or an easy-wearing cool-weather outer layer.
